Police: 1 Dead in Shooting at Copenhagen Free Speech Event

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Feb 14, 2015, 12:45 PM ET

A gunman fired on a cafe in Copenhagen as it hosted a free speech event Saturday, killing one man, Danish police said. The event was organized by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has faced numerous threats after caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad.

Danish police said the gunman shot through the windows of the Krudttoenden cafe, which the TV2 news channel said were riddled with some 30 bullet holes. Police spokesman Henrik Blandebjerg said three police colleagues at the event were also shot and wounded.

Helle Merete Brix, one of the event’s organizers, told The Associated Press that Vilks was at the meeting but was not hit.

On Meeting ‘Mohammed Dog’ Cartoonist Lars Vilks 1/8/15

On September 11, 2012, your humble blogger was privileged to meet, and literally stand with, Lars Vilks the renowned “Mohammed-as-Dog” cartoonist. We met at the Stop Islamization of Nations (SION) World Congress in Defense of Free Speech in New York City. Meeting Mr. Vilks in the context of a Free Speech conference takes on added meaning after the savage attack that left 12 dead in Paris yesterday merely because they dared to satirize Islam’s purported prophet:

Lars Vilks was arguably the “Superstar” of the stellar international panel of SION speakers. The Swedish artist (do not call him a cartoonist!!) has a fatwah against him for a sketch (don’t call it a cartoon!!) that offended Muslims. It portrays Mohammed as a dog (any image of their prophet is forbidden under Islam, and dogs are considered a filthy animal; combine the two and Jihadists have yet another excuse to be Jihadists!) (sketch ABOVE in this 2/14/15 update)

Mr. Vilks terms himself the “accidental counter-jihadist” asserting that he has “no special interest in Islam.” “My point of view is art” is how he optimistically describes his outlook of world events. Vilks explained that his notoriety arose when folks around Sweden began placing small renderings (sculptures or other artwork) of dogs along roadsides around Sweden as something of a prank. (Think of the “Tebowing” picture fad that swept the internet some months back and you’ll understand the basic premise.) As a result of the roadside dog fad, he did the sketch that would bring him into the public eye. “This has developed into a performance art” is how he (jokingly?) describes the virulent Muslim reaction to his sketch, the attempted arson of his home, and the general state of his life as he lives under the constant threat of death. Indeed, he explained that “the spectator creates the work [performance art].” Thusly, the continuing “performance art” which he says attendees in the conference room became a part of includes his living under 24 hour police protection for the past two years. Kudos to Mr. Vilks and all those who fight Islamist fundamentalism despite the threat of death. – Grizzly Joe
