TRUTHERS – UBL Was behind 9/11!!
[Author’s note: In recent postings across the internet (March of 2012!!), I have been disturbed to find that some folks claim there is no evidence that UBL was behind the 9/11 attacks. Are they revisionists or truly uninformed? I am therefore compelled to post the following digest of chronological FACTS from “The 9/11 Commission Report” (567 pages!) issued by “The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States” issued on July 22, 2004. I will post any post-9/11 statements attributable to UBL when time permits. VIDEOS ADDED BELOW 3/24/12.]
In 1992 the U.S. State Department learned that Usama Bin Ladin (“UBL”) was committed to financing jihad (holy war) against anti-Islamic governments worldwide.
Following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing Kahlid Sheikh Mohammed (“KSM”) considered attacking the United States. KSM saw New York City as the economic capital of the United States and therefore the primary target. KSM considered using aircraft as weapons as early as 1995.
In March 1995 UBL spoke of wanting a “Hiroshima” with at least 10,000 deaths. In 1996 a surge of reports about UBL and Al Qaeda led to creation of the CIA “Bin Laden Unit”. By 1997 the unit learned that Al Qaeda had a military committee planning operations against U.S. interests worldwide.
In February 1998 UBL issued a “fatwa” (a religious edict) through an Arabic London newspaper. The fatwa stated America had declared war against Islam. UBL directed the murder of any American, anywhere on earth, as the “individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do.” In an interview three months later by ABC-TV, UBL claimed it was important for Muslims to kill Americans and other infidels. Asked if he approved of attacks on civilians he replied,”we believe that the worst thieves in the world today and the worst terrorists are the Americans. Nothing could stop you except perhaps retaliation in kind. We do not have to differentiate between military or civilian. As far as we are concerned, they are all targets.” He went on to say “we are certain that we shall-with the grace of Allah-prevail over the Americans.” Moreover, he warned that”if the present injustice continues…, it will inevitably move the battle to American soil.”
Also in 1998 UBL operatives attacked the US Embassys in Nairobi, killing 213 and injuring 5,000, and Der es Salam, killing 11people. Interviewed about the deaths of the Africans in these attacks, UBL said “when it becomes apparent that it would be impossible to repel these Americans without assaulting them, even if this involved the killing of Muslims, this is permissible under Islam.” Asked if he had masterminded the bombings UBL responded that if jihad “is considered a crime let history be witness that I am a criminal.”
In late 1998 UBL approved mounting an attack on a US military vessel. The operative planning the attack reported directly to UBL. The USS Cole was attacked on October 12, 2000. Seventeen American sailors were killed, and 39 were injured. After the Cole attack, UBL encouraged the operative to continue plotting against the U.S. This operative was arrested November 2002 in the United Arab Emirates ending his career as a terrorist.
KSM joined Al Qaeda in late 1998 or 1999. Soon thereafter UBL decided to support KSM’s plan to attack the United States using commercial airplanes as weapons. UBL told KSM that Al Qaeda would support the proposal. The plot was now referred to within Al Qaeda as the “planes operation”. UBL discussed the planes operation with KSM and other operatives in a series of meetings in the spring of 1999. UBL and KSM developed a list of targets. UBL selected four individuals to serve as suicide operatives in the attack. (Two of them actually died in the attacks.) In the fall of 1999 these four operatives attended an elite Al Qaeda training course in Afghanistan at UBL’s direction. UBL subsequently directed the four go to the United States for pilot training.
In early 2001 UBL relayed instructions to 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta to proceed as planned. While preparations for the attack were nearing completion, Al Qaeda and the Taliban quibbled over military strategy in Afganistan. UBL insisted on launching a major attack directly against the United States. UBL insisted the attack proceed as soon as possible. UBL said “I will make it happen even if I do it by myself”. UBL wanted the operation carried out on May 12, 2001 seven months to the day after the Cole bombing.
In the summer of 2001 UBL made several remarks hinting at an upcoming attack. UBL routinely told important guests to expect a significant attack against U.S. interests. He further instructed training camps attendees to pray for the success of an attack involving 20 martyrs.
On June 12, 2001 a CIA report noted that an operative later identified as KSM was actively recruiting people to travel to the United States to carry out terrorist related activities for UBL.
In late August 2001 UBL formally notified Al Qaeda’s ruling council that a major attack against United States would take place in the coming weeks.
