William F. Buckley “The Rising Tide of Islam” (DVD review)
“The general ignorance of the Western World concerning Islam and it’s power, latent and active, to move men and create historical events is widely deplored and universally cultivated.” William F. Buckley Jr. introducing “The Rising Tide of Islam”
With an opening statement arguably more pertinent today than when he uttered it in 1979, William F. Buckley launches a very informative discussion of Islam. This DVD is a must-see! Dated references to Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (1902 – 1989) and the Soviet Union (which would fall 12 years after this broadcast) eerily align with more recent geo-political events. The panel discusses Islamic anti-Semitism, Arab Nationalism and Koranic interpretation among many other issues.
Ironically, given the label most widely used in discussing Islamic “issues” today, one panelist opines that “Islamic Fundamentalism” is an inappropriate term: “There’s no such thing as fundamentalism in Islam. There is orthodox in Islam.”- Dr. P.J. Vatikiotis
Buckley notes that “there is no coherent line of Western Diplomacy” regarding Islam. Thirty-five years later, has anything changed?
Buckley also bemoans the savagery of what is largely referred to today as Islamic Fundamentalism:
“I am not prepared to acknowledge that anybody is my cultural equal who believes in cutting people’s hand off when they steal…”
Thank goodness we did not have “political correctness” in 1979. -Grizzly Joe
