WSJ Sanitizing Islam-Inspired Crime Reportage?
The Wall Street Journal ran an article in today’s print edition entitled “Man Gets 18 Years for Seattle Attack Plot” WSJ 3/25/13. What follows is the full report exactly as it appeared in the print edition of the Journal.
SEATTLE—A man who plotted to attack a Seattle military complex with machine guns and grenades was sentenced on Monday to 18 years in prison.
Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, 35, also was ordered by federal Judge James Robart to undergo supervision for 10 years after his release.
Mr. Abdul-Latif, also known as Joseph Anthony Davis, pleaded guilty last December to conspiracy to murder U.S. officers and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.
Prosecutors had argued for a 19-year prison sentence with lifetime supervision following his release, saying Abdul-Latif directed major aspects of the planned attack, uncluding picking the Militray Entrance processing Station in south Seattle as a target.
Mr. Abdul-Latif declined to make a statement in court on Monday.
His public defender Jennifer Wellman told the judge that her client was remorseful. She argued for 17 years with five years of supervised release, saying Abdul-Latif was manipulated by a confidential informant. (WSJ 3/26/13)
Note that this report has no mention of “Islam”. Are we to assume that Islam was involved merely because Abdul-Latif has a “foreign-sounding” name? I certainly hope not, that sort of logic leads to stereotyping, something your humble blogger does not condone.
Sensing that there might be more to this story, a modicum of research revealed that there is an Islamic element to Abdul-Latif’s thwarted attack.
The Government alleges that Abdul-Latif was motivated by Islamic extremism, hatred for the United States military, and admiration for Osama Bin Laden. Seattle Weekly 10/20/11
A radical Muslim, Abdul-Latif said he admired Osama bin Laden and was upset about alleged atrocities committed by U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, according to a federal complaint.
“In his view, murdering American soldiers was justifiable,” the complaint stated. “He wanted to die as a martyr in the attack.” Seattle Times 6/24/11
So, given the radical Islamic element underlying (motivating?) Abdul-Latif’s crimes, why does the esteemed Wall Street Journal elect not to include the word “Islam” in its report? Fear of insulting the vast majority of law-abiding Muslims?
Why is it that almost 12 years after 9/11 the mainstream media is loath to truthfully report crimes committed by Islamic “extremists”? I posit that the mainstream media are generally politically correct propagandists furthering the message of Islamic apologists that Islam is merely a religion of peace.
Why do we bloggers have to go behind the story as reported to tie together those issues the mainstream media avoids?
